HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – In high school football action, Coldwater jumped out to a 22-3 halftime lead and then had to withstand a fourth quarter rally by Hastings as they defeated the Saxons 35-25 on Thursday night in their Interstate 8 opener.
Damon Beckhusen carried the ball 21 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals compiled 292 yards on the ground. McDonald’s Player of the Game Griffin Olmstead rushed for 73 yards and had 10 tackles on defense while Matt Gipple scored twice. Gage McGuire scored the other Coldwater touchdown.
Coldwater did not turn the ball over while the Cardinal defense forced Hastings into three turnovers.
Coldwater is now 1-1 and host Jackson Lumen Christi in their home opener at Cardinal Field next Friday night.

Quincy recorded its seventh straight victory over Bronson on Thursday night as the Orioles romped to a 47-0 triumph over the Vikings. It was the Big 8 Conference opener for both teams. Quincy racked up 307 yards on the ground. Sebastian Gillette rushed for 86 yards and a TD while Brandon Harrison had 83 yards and a score. Chandler Locke scored a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Evan Henning passed for a touchdown and ran for another. Jake Gifford also had a TD for the Orioles as they improved to 1-1 while Bronson dropped to 0-2.
Springport 22, Union City 20
Union City dropped their Big 8 Conference opener 22-20 at Springport. Gavin Hooker had 16 carries for 62 yards while Josh Watson passed for 80 yards. Larson Kever rushed for 62 yards. He also had four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Deacon Dey led the defense with six tackles. The Chargers dropped to 1-1.
