UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers survived and advanced to the championship game of the MHSAA Division 3 girls basketball district tournament on their home court Wednesday night as they defeated the upset-minded Bronson Vikings 52-45 at McNett Fieldhouse.
Bronson had the edge in play during the opening half as they took a 24-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
Union City used a 15-8 third quarter to grab a 38-32 lead. But the Vikings fought back and tied the game at 41 halfway through the final period. The Chargers then used an 11-2 spurt to take control.
Unlike Monday night, the Vikings could not overcome foul trouble against the Chargers as two of their players fouled out while two others were saddled with four fouls during crunch time.
The rugged physical game featured 43 fouls and 49 foul shots. Union City was 14-for-29 at the stripe while Bronson was 11-for-20.
Ellie Williams scored a game-high 17 points for the Chargers while Nala Payne added 15 points.
Lydia Wells led the Vikings with 16 points while Itzel Albarran added 11 points.
Bronson closed their season with a record of 6-18 while Union City will take a 17-6 record into Friday’s district title game against Schoolcraft.
The Eagles defeated Centreville in the second district semifinal 36-22. Schoolcraft’s Carly Couk led all scorers with 15 points as the Eagles improved to 15-7. Centreville finished 18-5.
The winner of Friday’s game will advance to next week’s Bangor regional tournament.
