BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – A Battle Creek woman was rescued after her vehicle went into the Kalamazoo River Wednesday night.
At around 11:00 p.m., crews with the Battle Creek Fire Department (BCFD) responded to a report of a vehicle in the Kalamazoo River near 20th Street and Jackson Street.
BCFD personnel arrived to find a Jeep Wrangler that left the roadway, knocked down a light pole, and came to a rest between 10 and 15 feet in the river, BCFD said in a release.
A firefighter wearing a cold water rescue suit entered the water to reach the vehicle that contained a 62-year-old Battle Creek woman, who was unconscious.
Another firefighter entered the water, freed the woman from the vehicle, and brought her safely to shore for treatment. She was evaluated, treated, and later released.
It’s believed a medical situation that may have contributed to the crash.
