UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The sustained significant structural and environmental damage Friday evening after a confirmed tornado tore through the area.
The most severe impacts are reported around the downtown district and the Union Lake area, where fallen trees and downed power lines have left over 2,200 residents without electricity.
Local emergency responders, village crews, and utility workers from Consumers Energy are currently on-site assessing the destruction and working to clear debris from impassable roadways.
A mobile command center has been established in the village to coordinate the extensive recovery efforts.
Village officials are urgently requesting that residents avoid all unnecessary travel, particularly in the hardest-hit downtown and lakeside zones. Extra traffic is creating significant obstacles for emergency vehicles and utility crews who need clear access to safely restore essential services.
Residents are asked to stay home if they do not have an essential need to be on the roads, allowing crews the necessary space to work. The village expressed appreciation for the community’s patience and cooperation as cleanup continues, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
