CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – Branch County’s last remaining team in the 2026 MHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament was eliminated Saturday afternoon, as Schoolcraft defeated Union City 54-40 in a Division 3 District Final played at Centreville High School.
The Chargers led 11-6 after the first quarter, but the Eagles used a 16-10 advantage in the second to take a 22-21 halftime lead. Schoolcraft led 38-32 after three and put the game away by outscoring the Chargers 16-8 in the final stanza.
Ellie Williams led Union City with 13 points, Nala Payne had 9, and Calli Wilkinson and Brooke Thomas each scored 6. The Chargers concluded their season with a 17-7 record.
For Schoolcraft, Alexis Walther led all scorers with 18 points, Carly Couk added 14, and Addison Sziede had 11. The Eagles will take a 16-7 record into their Division 3 Regional Semifinal contest against Kalamazoo Christian Monday night at Bangor.
Due to Friday’s tornado that struck Union City, the game was rescheduled for Saturday afternoon, and then moved to Centreville. On Saturday night, the Union City Athletic Department posted the following to its Facebook account:
Union City Athletics would like to thank both Centreville and Schoolcraft for helping our community during a time of need.
Although athletics often teaches us how to compete, moments like this remind us that sports are about much more than the game. They bring communities together and show the strength of supporting one another.
After the recent tornado forced us to move our basketball game from Union City to Centreville, the Centreville community stepped up in an incredible way. They helped secure a location and organized workers so the game between Union City and Schoolcraft could still be played.
We are extremely grateful for the generosity of donations, cooperation, and community spirit shown by both schools. Your support means a great deal to our athletes, students, and community.
