COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Senior Gavin Taylor was voted by his teammates as Most Valuable Player for the Coldwater Cardinal boys basketball team during their team banquet Sunday at Bill’s Grill House at the Coldwater Golf Course. It is the second MVP recognition for Taylor, who shared the honor in 2025 with Ayden Dirschell.
Other awards that were voted on by team members include:
- Most Improved Player (tie): Owen Tappenden, Dayton Ennis
- Best Defensive Player: Landon Dirschell
- Leadership Award: Jackson Reilly
- Scout Team/Bench Player: Michael Wright
- Hustle Award: Landon Dirschell
- Dedication Award: Julian Thompson
- Most Sportsmanlike: Gavin Taylor
Taylor finished his four-year varsity basketball career at Coldwater with 831 points, good for 10th on the school career scoring list. Other new additions to the Cardinal record book include Owen Tappenden’s 59% field goal percentage, tying him for sixth on the season list with Nate Tagert (1998-99 season), and Julian Thomson, third on the season three-pointer list with 41.
Gavin Taylor represented the Cardinals on the Interstate 8 All-Conference team, while Julian Thompson and Austin Downs were Honorable Mention. Landon Dirschell, Dayton Ennis, Travon Mitchell, Jackson Reilly, Owen Tappenden, and Gavin Taylor were named to the Interstate 8 Academic All-Conference team.
Coldwater finished the season 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the Interstate 8, which was good for fourth place.
