BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The late Arizona Senator and 2008 Republican Presidential nominee John McCain is being remembered around the world following his death Saturday. He is also being remembered for his one appearance in Branch County 14 years ago.
McCain was close to former Michigan Seventh District Congressman Joe Schwarz. Schwarz served as McCain’s Michigan campaign manager during the 2000 Presidential campaign and helped McCain win the Michigan Republican Primary that year. But McCain ran out of money and had to drop out of the race, as George W. Bush went on to win nomination and eventually the White House.
When Schwarz ran for Congress in 2004, McCain appeared with him during several campaign stops, including one in downtown Bronson.
Schwarz got 58 percent of the vote in November 204 but he only served one term in Congress, after he was beaten by current Congressman Tim Walberg in the 2006 G.O.P. Primary.
