COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) -Branch County Sheriff Fred Blankenship is calling for dedicated volunteers to join the Sheriff’s Victim Services Unit (VSU), a nonprofit organization that provides immediate, compassionate support to residents facing crises such as fires, accidents, and natural disasters.
Operating out of a retrofitted ambulance stocked with emergency supplies and comfort items, the VSU allows first responders to focus on the scene while volunteers assist families and coordinate with organizations like the Red Cross and United Way.
The team has been instrumental in recent recovery efforts, including cleanup following the Union City tornado, and remains a vital resource for the community during its most difficult moments.
Because the program relies entirely on unpaid volunteers, the Sheriff’s Office is seeking individuals who can offer a calm presence during emergencies.
New members undergo a six-month mentoring period followed by three days of specialized training with the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, ensuring they are fully prepared to serve alongside experienced coordinators.
Those interested in volunteering or making a donation to support disaster recovery can pick up an application at the Sheriff’s Office located at 379 Keith Wilhelm Drive in Coldwater. For more information on how to make a meaningful difference, contact the office directly at (517) 278-2325.
