COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – COLDWATER, MI Branch County and Southern Michigan are under a heightened alert as a powerful weather system brings the potential for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a sharp temperature gradient and advancing cold front are expected to trigger convective activity after 3:00 p.m. . Forecasters have placed extreme southern Branch County under a “Level 3” medium risk, warning that initial supercells may develop into a line of storms capable of producing large hail, damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, and isolated tornadoes.
The primary window for these severe threats is expected to conclude by this evening as much colder air rushes in behind the storms. The biggest threat will be along along and south of the I-94.
As the front passes, temperatures are forecast to plummet from today’s highs in the low 70s to the upper 20s by Friday morning, potentially ending with a brief transition to light snow.
