BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The new principal at St. Mary’s Assumption School in Bronson began her new job this week.
Angela Johnston takes over for David Kubel, who left last month for a position at Hackett Catholic Prep in Kalamazoo, after serving as St. Mary’s principal for six years.
Johnston was appointed to the St. Mary’s job by the Diocese of Kalamazoo. She previously served as the principal at Immaculate Heart of Mary-St. Casimir School in Lansing and worked as a principal in the Lansing Diocese for 17 years.
Johnston comes to St. Mary’s after being embroiled in a controversy over student protests last November. The Lansing State Journal reported at the time that Johnston sent a letter to parents which laid out steps of discipline if students did not to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance in protests similar to NFL players kneeling for the National Anthem.
The letter warned parents that students who don’t stand would be sent home for the rest of the day. If it happened a second time, the student would be sent home for the rest of the week. If it continued, the letter said “the school will receive that as a signal that the parents/caregivers of the child wish to terminate their relationship with IHM-St. Casimir and remove their child from the school.”
The letter also stated that they agreed with the Lansing Diocese, that demonstrations are not appropriate in its schools during the national anthem and the Pledge.
