The Viking softball team took both halves of their twinbill against Hillsdale, 9-1 and 22-0.
Ashlynn Harris, the winning pitcher in the opener, allowed 1 run on 2 hits, a walk, and 12 strikeouts. She also wend 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles and a triple. Braelynn Gimenez also had two singles, while Lydia Wells and Delanee Carpenter doubled.
In the nightcap, Madison Shaw tossed a three-inning no-hitter with 5 strikeouts. Eleven players had hits in the game; Harris had two singles and a triple, Gimenez went 3-for-3 and drove in 3 runs, Wells was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI, and Kalyeah Shoup was 3-for-4 with 5 runs batted in.
Head coach Beck Gray said afterwards, “The first game was really rough for us tonight. You could tell that we were coming off of spring break with no practice and a lot of nerves from our younger girls. I thought we pitched well both games but our hitting and defense struggled in the first game. It was nice to see our bats come alive the second game. We definitely have a lot to work on and I know the girls will put their nose to the grindstone and make those improvements.”
Both Vikings squads are idle until next week. The baseball team will open the Big 8 schedule next Tuesday hosting Maple Valley, while the softball team will entertain Mendon next Wednesday.
