LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday that would require voters to provide proof of citizenship to register and cast a ballot in state and local elections.
Under the proposed legislation, residents would be required to present a birth certificate, passport, naturalization documents, or a driver’s license to verify their status. The bill mirrors the federal SAVE America Act and follows a similar local ballot initiative aimed at preventing non-citizens from participating in the electoral process.
Republican supporters, argue the measure is a non-partisan effort to ensure election integrity, citing high public polling in favor of such requirements.
However, Democrats and voting rights advocates have signaled strong opposition, contending that the bill is unnecessary. Opponents maintain that Michigan’s current elections are already secure and note that documented instances of non-citizens attempting to vote remain extremely rare.
The bill is expected to fail in the state senate.
