John Albert Newberry, age 90, of Quincy, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at his home.
At his request, cremation has taken place and the family invites friends to attend a celebration gathering at the Butler Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 4-6 PM for the Legends of the Past event. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Quincy.
John was born April 4, 1936, in Quincy to Forrest and Carrie (Strong) Newberry. John graduated from Quincy High School, Class of 1954. He was the longtime owner of Canopys R Us in Quincy, which his sons continue to operate.
He was a member of the Yesterday and Today Tractor Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles 1907, UCT North America Coldwater Council 452 and Quincy Activities Group that helped organize a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for many years. John was one of the original founders and organizers for the Coldwater Car Show and Swap Meet, he was a member of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce and in 2015, was awarded the Citizen of the Year in Quincy.
Butler was his home away from home and some of his happiest moments occurred when he was in the pits talking to the drivers or posing with one of his “boys” in victory lane after a win.
Survivors include his four children, Kevin (Sandra) Newberry of Coldwater, Karol Booher of Quincy, Kendall “Ken” (Lora Snider) Newberry of Montgomery and Kelli (David Siler) Wheatley of Union City; life partner of 40 years, Rhonda Fargo; and brother, Leo Newberry; grandchildren, Kimberly, Eric, Jason, Tess, Autumn, Katrina, Kayla, Jordan and Jessica; and many great-grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Helen Beard; granddaughter, Brittany; and brothers, Homer and Earl Newberry.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
