COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Sheriff John Pollack says he’s cautiously optimistic a millage proposal on next Tuesday’s primary election ballot to pay for a new jail will be approved by voters.
Pollack had more than a dozen speaking engagements this summer across the county at local government and service club meetings to provide information about the millage question and the county jail. The Sheriff wrapped up his presentations Wednesday, including his appearance at the Coldwater Early Bird Exchange Club meeting.
Pollack told members of the Club he’s encouraged about the chances for a positive outcome on the millage because he’s heard more and more people spreading the word that a yes vote is needed because the financial future of the county is at stake. Pollack also said his department had offered to provide tours of the jail where inmates have been housed since 1985 in what used to be a medical care facility that was built in the 1950’s.
According to the Sheriff, there were a couple of tours conducted and the few people who appeared against the millage said after the tour, their opinions were turned around and they were convinced a new jail is necessary.
