COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – If you thought the weather so far this month has been more volatile than normal you would be correct
The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Northern Indiana has officially shattered a twenty-five-year-old record, issuing an unprecedented 55 severe thunderstorm warnings so far April in.
The surge in atmospheric instability nearly doubled the previous monthly record of 28 set in 2001, as a relentless series of powerful cold fronts collided with unseasonably warm, humid air.
NWS Meteorologist Dustin Norman says that the frequency of the warnings highlights a particularly volatile spring pattern, with some counties being placed under multiple warnings in a single afternoon.
Branch County was a central focus of the record setting activity, being included in 12 of the severe thunderstorm warnings issued so far this month. The county also faced significant damage during the mid-month peak, including an EF-1 tornado that struck southeast of Coldwater last Wednesday morning .
Norman credits enhanced radar technology and high-resolution satellite imagery for their ability to track these rapid developments with greater precision, though he emphasizes that the sheer volume of storm cells this month represents a significant and historic meteorological anomaly.
The NWS says they have also issued a record 6 tornado warnings this month with two of those being issued for Branch County early last Wednesday morning.
