Born on November 11, 1958, in South Bend, Indiana, to Ronald W. and Northa (Adams) Stephens Sr., Curt lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his community, and the many lives he mentored along the way. On June 25, 1983, he married the love of his life, Deana M. (Thomas), and together they built a life rooted in family, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Their marriage of over four decades was a true partnership and a constant example of love.
Curt graduated from Quincy High School in 1978 and went on to become a familiar and friendly face at Home Depot, where he was known not just as a salesman, but as someone always willing to lend a helping hand or share a story.
His greatest passion, however, was service, especially to the young people he guided through Scouting. As Scoutmaster of Troop 469 for decades, Curt shaped generations of boys into men, teaching them not only outdoor skills but integrity, perseverance, and respect. He was honored with the District Award of Merit and was a proud member of the Order of the Arrow, attaining Brotherhood status. Whether leading cave explorations, braving Klondike camps, or simply sitting around a fire, Curt created memories and lessons that will live on in countless lives.
Curt was deeply involved in his community. He was a dedicated member of the Coldwater Elks Lodge 1023, where he served as Esteemed Leading Knight. He was a former Quincy Village Council member, and past president of the Quincy Tip-Up Festival. He also spent many years teaching Hunter and Firearm Safety, sharing his knowledge with patience and care.
He found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments, hunting at dawn, fishing on quiet waters, tending his garden, cooking in cast iron, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with the wind at his back. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.
Curt is survived by his beloved wife, Deana; his daughter, Jessica (Eric) Clark of Union City; his son, Curtis Stephens II of Fort Lauderdale, FL; his sister, Cheryl (Steven) Blair of Coldwater; and his five cherished grandchildren, Catie (Kalob) Hanson, Jarid Clark, Loryn Clark, Malia Clark, and Kalvin Clark. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dennis Thomas; sister-in-law, DeLinda (Rob) Sprow; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Goldie Stephens; and his brothers, Ronald W. Stephens Jr., Terry Stephens, and Adam Stephens.
Curt will be remembered as a steady presence, a teacher, a storyteller, and a man who gave so much of himself to others. His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the community he served, and the countless lives he helped shape.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
