LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State Representative Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy) has introduced a bipartisan bill package, HB 5886-5889, aimed at reducing Michigan’s high auto insurance costs by providing drivers with more flexible coverage options.
The legislation seeks to eliminate the state’s mandatory $250,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) minimum, which is the highest in the nation, by allowing insurers to offer lower coverage levels and extending the existing opt-out system to all drivers.
The bill package targets high bodily injury liability limits, with HB 5888 proposing a reduction from $50,000/$100,000 to $25,000/$50,000 to better align with national standards and enhance state competitiveness.
Wortz says, reducing these mandates is essential to curbing high premiums that drive residents away. The bills have been referred to the House Committee on Insurance for review.
