COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Planning Commission approved special use permit requests on Monday night for a child group daycare home expansion on South Polk as well as for a proposed restaurant drive-through on the west side of the city. But they tabled a special use permit request from a property owner in the 100 block of West Chicago who wants to convert former commercial space into a residential unit.
Amanda Hall plans to expand a child group daycare home to serve between seven and 12 children at 51 South Polk which is in an A-1 One-Family Residential district. The only contingency calls for Hall to put in a fence of between five and six feet.
The other special use permit approved was from Victor Face Enterprises of Jonesville. They plan to locate a Biggby Coffee drive-through at 490 West Chicago Street which is within a C-1 Community Business district. The site is currently a vacant lot between Westside Shell and the Kids’ Campus daycare. Randy Rose, who runs the child care facility, raised several concerns including noise, lights and traffic.
The Biggby business will be in a part of Coldwater that has become increasingly busy. West Chicago is currently four lanes but City Manager Keith Baker said MDOT is looking to make that portion of U.S. 12 a three lane road in the near future.
Meanwhile, Commission tabled a special use permit request from Paul Manthri who wants to convert the former storefront at 165 West Chicago into a two bedroom apartment.
His wife Shane said the property was in bad shape when it was purchased last January.
The request was tabled because the Planning Commission members felt the new owners needed more time to correct several issues with the property.
