PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal softball team won both of their games Saturday at the Portage Northern Invitational to improve to a perfect 18-0 on the season. The Cardinals beat Coloma 5-1 and defeated Portage Northern 14-1 in five innings.
Coldwater broke a 1-1 tie against Coloma with three runs in the fifth. Rylie VanAken was 2-for-4 with a double, while Mya Porter went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Audrina Bucklin pitched the first three innings and earned the win, with Laynie VanAken striking out nine in four innings of relief work.
The Cardinals had red-hot bats against Portage Northern, collecting 13 hits. Vandria Bucklin went 2-for-3 with two doubles and drove in three runs, while Coley Burkhardt was 2-for-3 with one double and 3 RBIs. Laynie VanAken went 2-for-3 with two doubles, with Mya Porter and Mackenzie Searing also doubling. Laynie VanAken and Searing threw a combined three-hitter.
Coldwater will host 16-1 Harper Creek on Tuesday with first place in the Interstate 8 on the line.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Bronson went 2-1 at the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational, defeating Northview 4-1 and Grand Rapids Christian 12-1 before falling to Hudsonville Unity Christian 6-0.
In a pitcher’s duel against Northview, Madison Shaw threw a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts as the Vikings had just four hits, singles from Ashlynn Harris, Roni Bir, Makenna Arnett, and Audrey Shiery.
Bronson had eleven against Grand Rapids Christian as their bats awakened. Bir doubled and tripled and drove in three runs, Delanee Carpenter was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Harris went 2-for-2. On the circle, Harris allowed one hit and struck out five.
Against Unity Christian, Braelyn Gimenez was 2-for-3, and Harper Ratkowski added a double.
Head coach Becky Gray said after the tournament, “Overall it was a good day. We played some very good teams today and learned that our intensity level must be high to compete with those teams. We are still working to sure some things up but we are growing everyday!”
The Vikings will take a 14-5 record into Tuesday’s doubleheader at Stockbridge.
QUINCY, MI – Quincy went 1-1 at its Oriole Classic softball tournament, defeating Constantine 10-3 ald losing to Adrian Madison 15-3.
Against Constantine, Hannah Brown was 4-4 with 2 RBIs, Ary’Annah Freeman drove in two runs with a single and a double, and Miley Poindexter went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, all part of a 15-hit attack. Starter Taylor Lewis allowed two hits and struck out five in four innings, while Josi Parker gave up three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in a three-inning relief appearance.
Against Madison, Quincy had just four hits – Parker was 2-for-4, with the other hits coming from Poindexter and Gracin Hemker.
The Orioles are now 6-14 overall and will play at Olivet on Thursday.
