Ernest “Ernie” D. Eaton, 88, of Coldwater, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026 at his home.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Tekonsha. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion #52 Drill Team and the US Air Force.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 8, 2026 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Ernest was born December 17, 1937 in Jennings, MI to Ernest & Delia (Nelson) Eaton. He served in the US Air Force from 1955–1959 and went on to earn his associate’s degree in Process Engineering from Tri State University.
Ernie married Roberta Cole September 22, 1961 in Coldwater. She preceded him in death September 29, 2006.
Ernie began his career as a process engineer at RB&W in Coldwater then went to work for Bear Metals in Battle Creek. He spent many more years at Sintered Metals in Coldwater, retiring as plant supervisor in the late 1990’s. He also owned and operated the former River Lake Pub in Colon for a short time.
Ernie was a true patriot and proud veteran whose deep love for his country was evident in both his service and the way he lived his life. He was a lifetime member of the AMVETS; a long-standing member of the American Legion Post #52, serving 16 years on the Drill Team and he belonged to the Coldwater Moose and Eagles.
Ernie was a skilled craftsman and woodworker who loved working with his hands. He could build just about anything, including 3 houses from scratch. He enjoyed keeping busy and spending time outdoors, especially gardening.
Ernie is survived by his children Tina McGrath of Coldwater, Autumn (Jim) Anderson-Billman of Coldwater, Scott (Melissa) Eaton of Coldwater; his siblings Helen Hall, Gerald Eaton, Darrell (Helen) Eaton and brother-in-law Roy Cole, Jr.; his grandchildren Tyler Streets, Lyndsey Anderson, Codie Eaton, Shailyn (Jon) May, Quintin (Allison) Yearling, Chase Eaton; great grandchildren Leyton Streets, Jude Streets, Malia Yearling, Asher Dave Yearling, Greyson Geiger, Kyson Eaton, Apollo May, Killian May; many nieces and nephews including special nephew Dave Eyre of Coldwater.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law Dave McGrath, daughter-in-law Nora Eaton, 13 brothers and sisters and longtime companion Betty Thomas.
