COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Circuit Court has appointed retired Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz as the interim Prosecuting Attorney following Zachary W. Stempien’s elevation to the Circuit Court bench.
While the position will be decided by voters in the upcoming August primary and November general elections, the court appointed Fitz to ensure operational stability, as he brings over 40 years of experience, including 23 years as an elected prosecutor.
Fitz, a former president of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan known for his work on controlled substance task forces, will lead the office during this transition period.
Qualified candidates were sought through postings on various job platforms, and applications and resumes were accepted for consideration. The Court received applications from several individuals who possessed the qualifications necessary to serve in the role.
Although Michigan law prevents him from running for the seat in the upcoming election, the court cited his extensive experience as vital for the office’s immediate needs.
Fitz announces his resignation as Cass County Prosecutor earlier this month to peruse other career opportunities, his last day in that office was scheduled for Tuesday.
