EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) — Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl said during a virtual news conference on Friday morning that communication with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is much better following a change in leadership last week.
The ban on winter contact sports was extended by the MDHHS last Friday through February 21. The announcement was made just a half hour before the MHSAA Football Finals got underway at Ford Field in Detroit and seemed to catch association officials by surprise.
Robert Gordon stepped down as department head just hours later and Elizabeth Hertel was immediately appointment as his replacement by Governor Whitmer.
Uyl says there have been discussions this week with the MDHHS.
Uyl added games could be held shortly after the state gives the okay.
A State House committee heard testimony from student-athletes, coaches and parents on Thursday.
Governor Whitmer told a Detroit television station that same day it’s possible the action pausing winter contact sports could be lifted within days if COVID-19 tests continue to show low numbers.
