He was born June 25, 1970, in Toledo to Frances Fikel and Joyce (Bacon) VanDeilen. Growing up in Lambertville, MI, Rod attended St. Anthony’s Elementary School and graduated from Bedford High School.
At the age of 17, Rod enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly and honorably served his country, a chapter of his life he often described as the best years of his life. His time in service shaped the strength, loyalty, and camaraderie that he carried with him throughout his life. Following his military service, he would continue his education where he graduated from Mary Grove College leading to his acceptance of his position as editor of film with the Outdoorsmen’s TV show.
Ultimately, Rod finished his working career as a welder with EAB in Quincy until his retirement.
October 26, 2019, Rod married the love of his life, Rebel Norton, in Coldwater, and together they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. She survives.
A familiar and friendly face throughout the community, Rod was a dedicated member of both the Coldwater Moose Club and American Legion where he also volunteered. He valued fellowship deeply and was always willing to lend a helping hand or share a story, a laugh, or a song with those around him. Rod found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved gaming, listening to music, and singing whenever the opportunity arose.
He was an avid reader whose shelves were often filled with works by Stephen King and collections of poetry he treasured. Above all else, Rod cherished the time spent with his family and friends. Whether gathered around a table, sharing memories, or simply enjoying each other’s company, those moments meant the world to him.
Rod will be remembered for his kind heart, his sense of humor, his deep loyalty to those he loved, and the countless memories he created with family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife Rebel Fikel of Coldwater, Roderick leaves behind his mother Joyce VanDeilen of Temperance, MI; his step-mother Sandy Fikel of Montpelier, OH; his children Aubrey Fikel, Katie Breseman, Arrianna Norton both of Coldwater; his siblings Nicole McDonnell, Gary Egan, Jarrett Fikel both of Temperance, MI; his step-siblings Toni (Steve) Bump of Hillsdale, Tina (Lambert) VanderMade of Sherwood, OH, Tracy (Aaron) Snyder of Montpelier, OH; his granddaughter Rebel; many loving nieces, nephews, aunties, and uncles and his beloved cat Snowy.
