STURGIS,MI (WTVB) – Sturgis High School has been closed until further notice. The decision came after a contractor working on classroom renovations accidentally cut into a floor tile that may contain asbestos.
Out of an abundance of caution, district officials made the decision to halt operations and shut down the facility. The closure will remain in effect until environmental professionals can thoroughly evaluate the impacted area and conduct critical air quality testing.
The Sturgis Public Schools administration announced that the building will only reopen once they receive official clearance from safety experts.
In the meantime, all scheduled academic and athletic programs at the high school are disrupted, and individual group leaders are coordinating directly with students and families regarding changes or updates to their activities.
The incident occurs less than a month after voters rejected a $98.4 million bond proposal in May, which had been intended to fund facility upgrades and modern safety renovations across the district.
