COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to local residents , alerting the public to a recurring telephone scam targeting the community.
According to a release, fraudulent callers are pretending to be affiliated with the sheriff’s department and aggressively demanding immediate payment.
These scammers typically claim that the money is required to bond a loved one out of jail or to prevent the resident’s immediate arrest for non-compliance. The department emphasizes that these high-pressure tactics are entirely fake and designed to exploit fear and panic.
In response to the uptick in fraudulent activity, the Sheriff’s Department says they will never call individuals to demand money, Bitcoin, or gift cards for jail releases or legal compliance.
Anyone who receives a questionable call or believes they have been targeted by these impostors is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s department directly to report the incident.
