COLDWATER,MI (WTVB) – Branch County and southern Michigan are bracing for the first wave of extreme heat this season, as a powerful warm front ushers in tropical air.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Dustin Norman says they are tracking ground temperatures rising to 90 degrees or warmer over the next couple of days, presenting an early June spike well above the typical high-70s baseline.
Compounded by dew points surging toward the lower 70s, the entire area will face hazardous heat index values spiking between 95 and 105 degrees.
Local health officials urge residents to limit strenuous outdoor tasks, seek air-conditioned spaces, and stay well-hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The intense heat dome will also act as a volatile fuel source for severe weather, with forecasters warning of scattered pop-up storms and fast-moving squall lines.

The combination of steep atmospheric instability and moisture means any storm tapping into the environment could quickly trigger high wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, large hail, and torrential downpours.
Norman says you should monitor local weather updates, secure loose outdoor objects, and review emergency shelter plans as the extreme weather pattern unfolds.
