BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council approved an amended budget for the 2026 Fiscal Year as well as the budget for the 2027 Fiscal Year Monday night.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says they expect to end the year with a surplus of around $100,750 but there could be unexpected expenses that come in later this month or July, for the current fiscal year. Mersman added the city’s fund balance continues to be very healthy.
The proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget projects over $1-point-7 million in general fund expenditures and shows the need to use over $215,000 of fund balance.
The budget’s General Fund includes $75,000 for buildings, a $4,000 transfer to the Cemetery Fund and $85,000 for park improvements. The Cemetery Redevelopment Fund will also transfer $7,000 into the Cemetery Fund to cover cemetery maintenance.
Mersman says $150,000 has been budgeted for local street work while another $150,000 is budgeted for major street work.
The Capital Improvement Budget includes funds to replace service lines on Compton Street as part of the Compton Street Resurfacing Project.
In other business, the Council approved a quote of $22,900 from Dan Hersberger Construction for the rehabilitation and updating of the Department of Public Works salt barn. It was half the amount of the other quote submitted.
Mersman said in his report to the Council that the barn was in major need of repairs or it would no longer be salvageable. He felt the repairs and improvements will allow the city to greatly extend the life of the structure and better protect their road maintenance supplies.
