WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A fatal single-vehicle crash early Friday morning shut down a Hillsdale County intersection for nearly two hours after a truck struck a downed tree.
According to the Michigan State Police Jackson Post, troopers responded to the intersection of Meridian Road and Hoxie Road in Wheatland Township at approximately 12:45 a.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that hazardous weather conditions caused a tree to fall and block the roadway shortly before the accident occurred.
A 2010 Dodge Ram traveling southbound on Meridian Road was unable to avoid the obstacle and struck the tree.
The 21-year-old driver from Hillsdale, Michigan, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers inside the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Henry Ford Hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the roadway was completely cleared and reopened to traffic by 2:45 a.m. State police state that the investigation remains ongoing, though alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash.
