ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The National Weather Service has completed its survey of Thursday night’s severe storms, confirming an EF-1 tornado that touched down in extreme southeast LaGrange County, June 11 before tracking into Steuben County.
The unwarned tornado developed within a line of severe thunderstorms near Taylor Lake and Lake of the Woods, where it produced damage to electrical poles and significant tree damage consistent with estimated peak winds of 90 mph. It then tracked northeast into Steuben County before turning more easterly as its parent storm merged with another segment of the line, affecting portions of western and northern Angola.
Much of the observed damage was concentrated on trees, indicating the tornado may have intermittently lifted from the surface.
The late night twister struck at a time when many residents were asleep, fortunately the storm caused relatively minimal structural damage and, most importantly, no injuries or fatalities.
The National Weather Service confirmed it as one of 18 confirmed tornadoes from Thursday’s outbreak across Indiana.
