STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Sturgis Hospital is permanently shutting down all operations today at noon, bringing an end to more than a century of healthcare services in St. Joseph County.
The independent, 101-year-old facility announced the sudden closure earlier this week, citing insurmountable financial strains common to rural healthcare systems.
Hospital executives pointed to a severe combination of declining federal reimbursement rates, skyrocketing operational costs, and a sharp, sustained drop in patient utilization, including a 13% decline in emergency room volume.
Despite prior city loans, state funding lifelines, and a 2023 transition to a Rural Emergency Hospital model, leadership determined that a sustainable path forward was no longer possible after all partnership and acquisition efforts failed.
Flint-based Insight Health Systems on Thursday publicly expressed a willingness to engage local leaders and regulators to explore long-term solutions for restoring healthcare stability in Sturgis.
Until a resolution is found though , patients requiring emergency services are being routed to neighboring regional facilities, including Parkview LaGrange Hospital in Indiana, Beacon Three Rivers Hospital, and Insight’s own nearby Insight Hospital and Medical Center Coldwater.
Active patients with upcoming appointments are being contacted directly for cancellations, and individuals looking to retrieve their medical records can submit requests through the Sturgis Hospital Official Portal.
