GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A grand Rapids sports memorabilia shop has brokered the deal of a lifetime after a customer walked in holding what turned out to be an incredibly rare piece of baseball history.
Lou Brown, owner and president of Legends Sports & Games , recently purchased a collection of nearly 200 vintage baseball cards from 1933.
The anonymous patron initially brought the box in with zero knowledge of its value, telling store staff that the cards were “either duds or diamonds.”
Brown says her er jaw dropped when he estimated the collection’s cumulative worth to be over $100,000, a shocking discovery for items that had been hidden away and forgotten inside her late brother’s storage unit in Nebraska.
The “stunning” 200-card stash makes up the vast majority of the iconic 1933 Goudey baseball set, which is revered by collectors as one of the most significant releases in the history of the hobby.
Anchoring the collection are four highly coveted Babe Ruth cards, two Lou Gehrig cards, and two Mel Ott cards, alongside several other legendary Hall of Famers.
Brown noted that having four Ruth cards in a single private haul “is a big deal,” with individual high-value standouts potentially commanding upwards of $20,000 each once they are officially authenticated and graded.
For a business that has been a staple of the West Michigan trading card community for over three decades, the find represents one of the biggest vintage discoveries in the shop’s history.
