ANN ARBOR, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball coach Dusty May is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, according to sources from ESPN.
The 49-year-old coach makes a massive leap to the NBA just two months after leading the Wolverines to an NCAA National Championship.
May, who compiled an exceptional 64-13 record over two dominant seasons in Ann Arbor, reportedly found the professional ranks too intriguing to pass up after previously ruling out other collegiate openings.
He becomes the first college head coach to make a direct jump to the NBA since former Michigan coach John Beilein joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019.
NBC college sports play by play man John Fanta says this is a shocker for the college basketball world
A significant factor driving May to Texas is the allure of coaching Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks’ generational cornerstone who recently captured the NBA Rookie of the Year award after averaging 21.0 points per game.
Fanta says the Wolverines were in position for another big year
Armed with a proven track record of rapid program turnarounds—including a historic 2023 Final Four run at Florida Atlantic University, May will now tasks his acclaimed, player-centric system with maximizing Dallas’ young talent on the professional stage.
