LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt officially suspended his campaign for governor on Monday, just hours after President Donald Trump endorsed his primary opponent, U.S. Rep. John James.
Nesbitt, who launched his “Make It In Michigan” campaign roughly 18 months ago, announced his exit on X , urging the Republican party to unite.
In his statement, Nesbitt formally endorsed James, praising him as a decorated combat veteran and a proven businessman.
Nesbitt wrote on X “A divided primary only helps Democrats stressing the need for a consolidated front ahead of the general election.
Nesbitt’s departure leaves a narrowed three-candidate Republican field ahead of the upcoming primary election. While Nesbitt chose to bow out to prevent a fractured base, his remaining primary opponents, former Attorney General Mike Cox and businessman Perry Johnson, both released statements confirming they will stay in the race despite Trump’s endorsement of James.
The eventual Republican nominee will advance to face the Democratic nominee, which features top contenders including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Nesbitt confirmed he will continue his current duties as the state’s Senate Republican Leader while shifting his campaign resources to support James.
