KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – A man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by an eastbound Amtrak train Monday night while attempting to cross the railroad tracks near the Western Michigan University main campus.
First responders from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Oliver Street and Stadium Drive. Upon arrival, emergency crews located the male bicyclist, who was immediately pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the collision, the passenger train, identified as Route 354 traveling from Chicago toward Detroit, came to a complete halt, keeping passengers on board for over an hour while investigators searched the tracks.
Officials from the Kalamazoo Forensics Crime Lab were seen recovering an intact bicycle from the area as part of their evidence gathering.
The intersection was temporarily taped off and closed to traffic before reopening late Monday night.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name or age, as they say the investigation is continuing.
