COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging residents and visitors to prioritize fire safety as they celebrate Independence Day this year.
With summer activities in full swing, officials emphasize that dry weather conditions can rapidly turn a small spark into a dangerous wildfire.
The DNR reminds the public that fireworks, campfires, and outdoor grills are the primary causes of accidental fires during the holiday week. To minimize risks, individuals should check local burn permits, clear debris around fire pits, and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby at all times.
Special caution is advised when handling and disposing of consumer fireworks, which are legally permitted around the holiday but carry significant safety liabilities.
Fireworks should only be lit on paved or bare-dirt surfaces away from dry grass, brush, and overhanging trees.
Once the festivities end, the DNR instructs users to soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight before throwing them in the trash. By taking these simple, proactive precautions, Michiganders can protect the state’s vibrant natural resources and ensure a safe, enjoyable holiday for their communities.
