COLDWATER, MI9 (WTVB) – The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency in Coldwater, Michigan, has issued a comprehensive public safety advisory ahead of the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday celebrations.
To prevent foodborne illnesses during Independence Day barbecues, health officials emphasize the importance of thorough grill cleaning to avoid cross-contamination and safe thawing techniques using a refrigerator, cold water, or a microwave.
The agency highlights proper cross-contamination prevention by separating raw meats from vegetables, alongside strict minimum internal cooking temperatures: 155°F for beef and pork, 145°F for fish, and 165°F for poultry.
Furthermore, any leftovers must be sealed tightly and refrigerated within two hours, or packed in a well-iced cooler within one hour if outdoors, under the standard safety rule: “when in doubt, throw it out.”
In addition to food safety, the agency urges residents to exercise extreme caution with fireworks to avoid preventable emergency room visits.
The community guidelines recommend buying only legal consumer fireworks, strictly supervising children around high-temperature sparklers, keeping a water hose or bucket nearby, and celebrating sober to maintain quick reaction times.
Officials stress that individuals should never lean over fuses, light only one firework at a time, never point them at people or structures, and soak any “dud” fireworks in water for 20 minutes before disposal.
For maximum safety, local families are encouraged to attend professional community displays, and they can find additional health resources by visiting the agency’s website at www.bhsj.org.
