COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Health officials in Branch County, are actively treating and monitoring an individual diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB), the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency confirmed Monday.
Disease Prevention Director Heidi Hazel says that strict treatment protocols and quarantine measures are in place to minimize any risk to the public. The patient is receiving daily monitoring to ensure medication adherence, with an initial 14-day quarantine period during which they are considered most infectious.
Once treatment reduces contagiousness, the individual can safely reintegrate into the community.
Due to privacy laws, officials can not release details about the patient’s identity or specific location within the county.
This marks the second active TB case in Branch County this year, following one reported in 2025 linked to Coldwater High School.
Hazel noted that while TB remains present in Michigan, cases are relatively rare.
Health officials are conducting contact tracing to identify and test anyone who may have been exposed, offering treatment for latent TB infections to prevent future active cases.
Symptoms of active TB can include a persistent cough, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue, often developing gradually over weeks or months.
