COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With the calendar flip to July, the Michigan State Police, along with local and county law enforcement agencies across the state, are launching an intensified speed enforcement campaign running throughout the entire month.
Aimed at reducing dangerous driving during the peak summer travel season, the initiative deploys an increased presence of marked patrols specifically targeting motorists exceeding posted limits.
Run by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP), the crackdown operates under the statewide “SAFER by 2030” initiative, which leverages federal traffic safety funding to lower roadway fatalities.
The targeted enforcement follows alarming data provided by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, which revealed a 4.2% jump in speed-involved crashes across the state.
In total, speed-related incidents climbed to 22,260 crashes in 2025, with single-vehicle accidents accounting for 71% of those cases.
While overall speed-related fatalities lowered by 15.7% down to 177 deaths, state safety officials stress that speeding remains a highly preventable threat.
