ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – 20-year-old Ohio man has died following a July 4 crash near Angola, Indiana, where a pontoon boat detached from a truck, overturned, and trapped a passenger.
Cameron Laney of Sherwood, Ohio was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries Sunday morning. Police say he had been riding in the boat on the trailer.
An investigation revealed that 22-year-old Chase Gustwiller of Defiance, Ohio, was towing the boat with a pickup truck and turned onto Metz Road at a high rate of speed, causing the vessel to detach, slide, and overturn.
Gustwiller showed signs of impairment at the scene and was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a Level 4 felony.
While the truck sustained no damage and the weather was clear, alcohol is believed to be a factor, and the incident remains under investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and Angola Police.
Gustwiller has since posted a $10,000 surety bond and was released.
