FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – A nearly six hour standoff at a motel west of Fremont, Indiana ended late Thursday afternoon when a suspect surrendered.
Indiana State Police say a Fremont Police Officer was called to the Travelers Inn on State Road 120 just before 11:00 a.m. to conduct a routine welfare check.
A suspect fired at the officer and missed after the officer went to a room.
The shooting incident led to a number of police from other agencies to respond to the motel.
Negotiators talked with the suspect throughout the afternoon in an attempt to end the situation peacefully.
There was no immediate word on any injuries.
State Road 120 was closed for about a one mile area during the standoff. Fremont Community Schools had to go into a lockdown for their summer classes and basketball camp before deciding to dismiss early.
The motel where the standoff is taking place at is right across 120 from the Briali Winery which used to be the Country Meadows Golf Course.
