44-year-old Isaiah Christopher Merkle, is facing multiple charges after driving onto a secured sidewalk at the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, and initiating a standoff.
After fleeing the initial encounter at 3:43 p.m., Merkle was located near the west village limits of Centreville, where he claimed to be armed, leading to the activation of the St. Joe Valley Special Response Team and a temporary traffic halt.
Following negotiations and active resistance, which required the deployment of a Taser, deputies took Merkle into custody.
The investigation revealed Merkle had intended to drive his vehicle through the Sheriff’s Office building, and he now faces charges including Operating While Intoxicated (3rd offense) and four counts of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer.
Merkle remains in the St Joseph County jail on a $50,000 bond.
Sheriff Chad L. Spence praised the multi-agency response, which included the Centreville-Constantine Police, Michigan State Police, and local emergency services, for safely resolving the dangerous incident.
