COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County mental health care system is facing severe logistical and financial strains following the sudden closure of the county’s only local inpatient psychiatric resource.
Earlier this month Insight Hospital & Medical Center Coldwater officially suspended operations at its third-floor behavioral health unit to undergo a modernization evaluation.
Without these local inpatient beds, the Branch County Probate Court and Pines Behavioral Health must now compete for a highly limited pool of out-of-county psychiatric placements in areas like Kalamazoo and Hillsdale.
This forced redirection has raised serious concerns regarding delayed care, overextended emergency medical transportation, and reduced healthcare access for Branch County residents.
This service gap comes at a precarious time, as local administrators anticipate rising operational costs paired with a tightening funding landscape. Pines Behavioral Health, which funds roughly 75% of its annual $21.9 million budget through Medicaid, is navigating these out-of-county transfers amid broader national anxieties regarding proposed multi-trillion-dollar federal cuts to Medicaid infrastructure.
To counter the disruption, Pines Behavioral Health is leaning heavily on its 24-hour mobile crisis team to de-escalate psychiatric emergencies locally and prevent hospitalizations whenever possible.
However, officials say that delivering identical levels of care will require substantially more travel time and resources until local infrastructure stabilizes.
