COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Public Utilities are convening a historic joint informational meeting this evening to address the zoning and regulation data centers.
This evenings joint meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Henry L. Brown Municipal Building, and marks the first time in recent memory that all three governing bodies have met together.
The evening’s agenda centers around an educational presentation led by an expert from the Michigan State University Extension and is designed to assist city officials on how these massive technology facilities operate and how municipal ordinances can be structured to manage them effectively.
Both the city council and planning commission are in favor of moving toward permanent regulatory frameworks following a wave of public concern and local social media rumors regarding potential developments.
While the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act prevents local governments from entirely banning data centers, municipalities retain the right to impose strict operational restrictions. City Manager Keith Baker says tonight’s meeting will help serve as a guide on how to move forward in writing those new regulatory ordinances
City officials have emphasize that there are currently no active data center proposals for Coldwater. Instead, tonight’s joint meeting serves as a foundational step to protect neighborhoods from potential grid strain, heavy water consumption, and operational noise before any future developers arrive.
