DEWITT, MI (WTVB) – Thunderstorms in the Lansing area Saturday disrupted high school sports events, but the Coldwater boys varsity soccer team was able to get in one game at the Panther Cup Invitational, beating the host team DeWitt 2-1.
The Cardinals fell behind 1-0 with 25:18 to play in the first half on a long range shot by DeWitt. Coldwater tied the score with 22:50 to play in the second half on a goal from Riath Shaamala, assisted by Abdullah Ahmed. Shaamala then scored again with 1:47 to play, assisted by Leandro Sanchez, to give them the win.
Jensley Norvilus and Mackenson Berry split time in goal and each had two saves, as DeWitt outshot Coldwater 5-4.
The Cardinals Panther Cup Invitational championship game against Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern was canceled due to thunder and lightening in the area.
Coldwater is now 2-1 on the season and will travel to Edwardsburg Wednesday.
The Cardinal junior varsity team had their first game Saturday against DeWitt canceled due to the storms, and their second game against Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern ended early in a 1-1 tie due to the weather. They are still undefeated on the season at 1-0-2.
Wesam Almattar had the lone goal for Coldwater.
The JV team also plays at Edwardsburg Wednesday.
