COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Road crews in Coldwater have officially begun a $291,000 pavement repair project at the busy US-12 and I-69 interchange, forcing single-lane closures that began Tuesday morning.
Driven by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and state contractor C&D Hughes, Inc., the emergency infrastructure fixes stretch from Michigan Avenue eastward to Willowbrook Road. The target of the construction is to remove and replace severely deteriorating, 1967-era concrete with fresh asphalt, addressing a persistent plague of deep potholes where previous temporary cold-patches have failed.
Motorists traveling through the east side of Coldwater are being advised by transportation officials to expect consistent traffic delays and allow for extra travel time.
While these lane restrictions are scheduled remain active through Friday, October 9, City Manager Keith Baker says MDOT officials say the completion could be much sooner, but he continues urging caution when driving in the construction zone
A multi-million-dollar, full-scale reconstruction of the wider US-12 corridor—which will completely strip and rebuild the highway’s failing base material—is currently planned by MDOT to take place in 2028.
