LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced a landmark multistate settlement with Meta Platforms, Inc., bringing sweeping child-safety reforms to Instagram and Facebook alongside at least $171 million in funding for Michigan.
The agreement, involving 47 states and several U.S. territories, resolves claims that Meta intentionally designed addictive features, exposed youth to severe mental health risks, and misled the public about platform safety.
Under the agreement, Meta is required to implement strict safety measures, including a two-hour daily time limit for children with mandatory “Productive Pauses,” nighttime access blocks from midnight to 6:00 a.m., and the removal of harmful features like public like counts.
These changes aim to protect young users from content promoting self-harm and bullying, with compliance monitored by an independent auditor.
