UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Sweltering late-summer temperatures have forced school districts across Southern Michigan to alter their schedules today, with several school corporations opting for early dismissals to protect students from the extreme heat.
In districts like Union City where older school infrastructure often lacks modern air conditioning, the combination of high humidity and temperatures climbing into the 90s made classrooms uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for learning.
UC school officials say that dismissing students before the hottest hours of the afternoon became a necessary precaution, mirroring actions taken in other districts as a heat advisory remains in effect for the second straight day.
For Union City students who attend vocational centers in the afternoon they will still have buses provided for them to attend as normal as those buildings have air conditioning.
For students participating in after-school activities, activity leaders and coaches will communicate directly with families regarding any changes to practices or schedules due to the weather
Some other districts shortening the school the school day today include Constantine Public Schools, Hudsonville Public Schools and Mendon Community Schools.
