INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WTVB) – It looks like those trips many Branch County residence have been taking across the state line to fuel up this summer will continue into the fall.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has extended his suspension of the state’s gas taxes through October 6. Braun announced the extension on Thursday.
The suspension applies to Indiana’s Gasoline Usage Tax and Gasoline Excise Tax.
Braun said during his announcement “Affordability is my top priority, and my gas tax suspensions are delivering the cheapest gas in America for Hoosiers, I’m keeping those savings going for Hoosier families. My recommended budget will tap our reserves to keep state and local infrastructure projects fully funded.”
The governor’s office said the suspension is part of a new energy emergency that took effect Aug. 7. The emergency was prompted by oil disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Canadian wildfires.
The energy emergency will last 120 days. The governor’s office said Braun will reevaluate the gas tax in 30 days to determine whether another pause is necessary.
This energy emergency is separate from the Iran conflict that triggered the first gas tax holiday. Braun first suspended the Gasoline Usage Tax in April and expanded the relief in May to include the Gasoline Excise Tax.
As of Thursday, Indiana’s state average for a gallon of regular gasoline stands at $3.44, according to AAA. That is the lowest average in the country and 25 cents lower than the second-lowest state, Texas, at $3.69.
