READING, MI (WTVB) – Union City’s “Ground and Pound” offense could not be stopped on Thursday night as the Chargers improved to 2-0 with a 41-8 victory over the Reading Rangers at Barre Field in Reading.
Unofficially, the Chargers offense rushed for 222 yards and added 66 yards in the air as they won their sixth straight game against the Rangers.
Union City quarterback Braxton Miller ran for two scores and passed for another in the first half. He opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on a 38 yard scamper. He added a one yard TD and threw a eight yard touchdown pass to Micah Payne in the second quarter.
Kenny Case’s 10 yard touchdown and a 63 yard house call by Dalton Hawk rounded out the Chargers first half scoring as they built a 35-0 halftime lead.
With a running clock during the second half, Hawk concluded the Union City scoring in the third quarter as he punched in his second TD of the night from a yard out.
Union City’s bid for a second straight shutout was spoiled by the never-say-die Rangers with just over two minutes to play in the game. Carter Bassage threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Parker Riddle and Reid Westfall tacked on the two point conversion.
The Chargers defense held the Rangers offense unofficially to just 65 total yards.
Besides his two touchdowns, Hawk rushed for 119 yards on nine carries. Miller had seven carries for 88 yards and passed for 66 yards. Trey McDonald had eight carries for 43 yards.
Union City has outscored their opponents 89-8 in the first games of the season. “The Shield” and Branch County bragging rights will be on the line next Friday night when the Chargers host the Bronson Vikings at Alumni Field.
JACKSON, MI – Quincy also improved to 2-0 with a 39-0 shutout win at East Jackson. The Orioles now hold a 3-1 lead in the all-time series against the Trojans.
Next Friday, Quincy will host a Stockbridge team that’s still licking their wounds following their losses to Leslie and Bronson to start the season.
