COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan ranks among the least diverse states in the nation, landing at number 39 overall in a comprehensive new study released by personal finance website WalletHub.
The annual report evaluated all 50 states across six broad categories, measuring not only race and ethnicity, but also factors such as socioeconomic backgrounds, languages spoken, religious affiliations, and industry occupations.
Michigan’s low placement sits adjacent to Ohio and Indiana, which tied at 36th, marking a broader trend of lower diversity metrics across large portions of the industrial Midwest.
The findings arrive as the broader United States continues a steady demographic shift toward greater multiculturalism. Nationwide data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows the country’s overall diversity index increasing, with projections indicating the U.S. will no longer have a single racial or ethnic majority in the coming decades.
While sunbelt states like California and Texas continue to lead the country as the most diverse, states in northern New England and the Appalachian region recorded the lowest scores, with West Virginia ranking as the least diverse state in the nation.
